Target Information
The expression pattern of the Prox1 homeobox gene suggests that it plays a role in various embryonic tissues, including the lens. Prox1 mRNA is detected in many human tissues, with the highest expression in the lens. Homozygous Prox1- mice die at midgestation due to developmental defects, including abnormal lens formation. Prox1 regulates cellular proliferation, expression of Cdkn1b and Cdkn1c, E-cadherin expression, and apoptosis during lens development. It is also essential for lymphatic system development and hepatocyte migration in mice. Loss of Prox1 leads to a smaller liver and impaired retinal progenitor cell cycle regulation. Prox1 acts as a key regulator of progenitor-cell proliferation and cell-fate determination in the vertebrate retina.
