Target Information
The Apoliprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme-catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family consists of cytidine deaminases acting on monomeric nucleoside and nucleotide substrates. APOBEC3G, a key isoform, contributes to cellular defense against retroviral infection by incorporating into HIV-1 virions and inducing hypermutation in viral DNA, thereby destabilizing the viral genome. This mechanism is counteracted by the HIV-1 Vif protein, which promotes ubiquitination and degradation of APOBEC3G. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) blocks APOBEC3G depletion while maintaining its antiviral activity.
