Target Information
Small Maf proteins, including MAFK, act as transcriptional repressors when forming homodimers due to the absence of a transactivation domain. When heterodimerized with larger basic-zipper proteins, they can serve as transcriptional activators, recruiting these partners to specific DNA-binding sites. Small Maf proteins also heterodimerize with Fos and may function as competitive repressors of the NF-E2 transcription factor.
