Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins serving numerous functions in excitable and non-excitable cells.
The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) differs from most other potassium channels in that its activation is controlled by both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization.
Maxi K⁺ structure enables dual activation. The channel core is a Maxi K⁺ alpha homotetramer containing both a voltage sensor and an intracellular calcium-binding domain.
In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit (1:1 stoichiometry) decreases the calcium concentration required to keep the pore open by 5–10 fold.
