Target Information
Prohibitin is encoded by an evolutionarily conserved gene that is ubiquitously expressed. It is believed to act as a negative regulator of cell proliferation and may function as a tumor suppressor. Mutations in the PHB gene have been associated with sporadic breast cancer. Prohibitin is expressed as two transcripts with varying lengths of the 3′ untranslated region; the longer transcript is more abundant in proliferating tissues and cells, suggesting a possible role as a trans-acting regulatory RNA.
