Target Information

Slc1a6 encodes a protein that functions as a glutamate transporter, part of the excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT) family. These sodium- and potassium-dependent transporters are widely distributed throughout the brain and play a key role in the uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate.
SLC1A6 acts as a symporter transporting one amino acid molecule with two or three Na⁺ ions and one proton, coupled with the counter-transport of one K⁺ ion. It also mediates Cl⁻ flux to prevent charge imbalance during transport.
This transporter contributes to the rapid removal of glutamate from the synaptic cleft, essential for terminating postsynaptic signaling.
