Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane receptor commonly referred to as DC-SIGN (CD209) due to its expression on the surface of dendritic cells and macrophages. The encoded protein plays a key role in the innate immune system by recognizing a broad range of pathogens, including parasites and viruses.
It contains three domains: an N-terminal transmembrane domain, a tandem-repeat neck domain, and a C-type lectin carbohydrate recognition domain.
The extracellular region functions as both a pathogen recognition receptor and a cell adhesion receptor by binding carbohydrate ligands on microbial and endogenous cell surfaces.
The neck region enables homo-oligomerization, enhancing binding avidity to multivalent ligands.
Variations in the number of 23-amino-acid repeats in the neck domain can affect ligand binding ability.
This gene is closely related to L-SIGN (GeneID 10332), with differences in ligand-binding properties and tissue distribution.
Alternative splicing results in multiple variants.
