Target Information
Vision involves the conversion of light into electrochemical signals processed by the retina and transmitted to the brain. Rhodopsin, a membrane-bound protein, absorbs light and activates transducin, a GTP-binding protein. Activated transducin promotes cGMP hydrolysis by phosphodiesterase (PDE), leading to closure of ion channels and membrane hyperpolarization. Rhodopsin activity is terminated by phosphorylation and arrestin binding. Transducin composition differs between photoreceptor cells—rod transducin (Trα, Tβ, Tγ) and cone transducin (Tcα, Tβ, Tγ)—which contributes to varying light sensitivities.
