Target Information
Mitochondrial inner membrane calcium uniporter (MCU) mediates calcium uptake into mitochondria and forms the calcium-conducting subunit of the uniporter complex (uniplex). Its activity is regulated by MICU1 and MICU2—down-regulated at low Ca²⁺ levels and enhanced at higher Ca²⁺ levels. MCU plays a critical role in mitochondrial calcium homeostasis, influencing cellular bioenergetics, calcium signaling, and apoptosis pathways. It also contributes to calcium buffering in cardiomyocytes, regulates mitochondrial calcium loading during acute stress, and affects insulin secretion, muscle size, and synaptic vesicle endocytosis.
