Target Information
The general transcription factor TFIIE plays an essential role in eukaryotic transcription initiation together with RNA polymerase II and other general factors.
Human TFIIE consists of two subunits: TFIIE-alpha (57 kDa) and TFIIE-beta (34 kDa). TFIIE joins the preinitiation complex after RNA polymerase II and TFIIF.
TFIIE-alpha is necessary for transcription initiation and can replace the natural subunit in vitro.
Its sequence includes structural motifs such as leucine repeat, zinc finger, and helix-turn-helix, showing similarity to bacterial sigma factors, suggesting a role in transcription regulation.
