Target Information

This gene belongs to the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related gene clusters tandemly linked on chromosome 5. These clusters have a unique genomic organization similar to B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters.
The alpha gene cluster contains 15 cadherin superfamily genes related to mouse CNR genes, consisting of 13 highly similar and 2 distantly related coding sequences.
Each gene includes 15 N-terminal variable exons followed by shared C-terminal constant exons. The N-terminal exons encode six cadherin ectodomains, and the C-terminal exons encode the cytoplasmic domain.
These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral plasma membrane proteins, likely playing a critical role in the establishment and function of specific cell-cell connections in the brain.
Alternative splicing has been observed, and additional variants have been suggested but not fully characterized.
