Target Information
CD18 integrin beta 2 subunit is a 90 kDa type I transmembrane protein expressed on all leukocytes.
It forms heterodimers with integrin molecules CD11a–d at the cell surface, participating in cell adhesion and signaling.
Leukocyte (β2) integrins include:
- αLβ2 (CD11a/CD18, LFA-1)
- αMβ2 (CD11b/CD18, Mac-1, CR3)
- αXβ2 (CD11c/CD18)
- αDβ2 (CD11d/CD18)
These integrins are essential for proper leukocyte migration and intercellular contact.
Absence of CD18 leads to leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1), and reduced expression can cause psoriasiform skin disease.
CD18 also mediates leukotoxin-induced cytolysis by Mannheimia haemolytica.
Two transcript variants encoding the CD18 protein have been identified.
