Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones involved in growth control. The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17. These genes exhibit high sequence identity, and alternative splicing produces five isoforms (19–24 kDa).
hGH is secreted by pituitary somatotroph cells and acts via cytokine receptor family membrane receptors. It stimulates IGF-1 secretion from the liver and other tissues, promoting myoblast differentiation and proliferation, amino acid uptake, and protein synthesis. Mutations or deletions in GH1 can cause growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
