The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SAC domain-containing protein family.
The SAC domain (~400 amino acids) includes seven conserved motifs with phosphoinositide phosphatase activity.
The yeast homolog Sac1p regulates phosphoinositides and influences actin cytoskeleton organization, Golgi function, and vacuole morphology.
Membrane-bound phosphoinositides act as signaling molecules and are crucial for vesicle trafficking in eukaryotic cells.
Mutations in this gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 4J.
