Target Information
Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase—Pol I, II, and III—each responsible for synthesizing different classes of RNA.
- Pol I: Transcribes rRNA genes for the precursor of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA molecules.
- Pol II: Transcribes protein-encoding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs.
- Pol III: Transcribes 5S rRNA and all tRNA genes.
Each RNA polymerase class is composed of 9–15 different polypeptides. The RPB6 and RPB8 subunits are shared among all three RNA polymerases.
