Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones involved in growth control. The gene is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17, along with four related genes in the same transcriptional orientation, likely evolved by gene duplication. Although these five genes share high sequence identity, they are selectively expressed in different tissues. Alternative splicing generates additional isoforms. This family member is mainly expressed in the placenta and uses multiple transcription initiation sites. Expression of chorionic somatomammotropin hormones 1 and 2 increases during development, with the ratio of 1 to 2 rising by term. Structural and expression differences contribute to developmental regulation and tissue specificity.
