Target Information
This gene belongs to the GPI family, encoding multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase proteins involved in energy pathways. The protein is a dimeric enzyme that catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
In the cytoplasm, it participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, while extracellularly it acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Defects in this gene can lead to nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, and severe deficiency may be associated with hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
