Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the peptidyl arginine deiminase (PADI) family of enzymes, which catalyze the post-translational deimination of proteins by converting arginine residues into citrullines in the presence of calcium ions.
The type II enzyme (PADI2) is the most widely expressed family member, with known substrates including myelin basic protein in the CNS and vimentin in skeletal muscle and macrophages.
It is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and glaucoma pathogenesis.
This gene exists in a cluster with four other paralogous genes.
