Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the vaccinia-related kinase (VRK) family of serine/threonine protein kinases. It is widely expressed in human tissues and shows increased expression in actively dividing cells such as those in testis, thymus, fetal liver, and carcinomas. The encoded protein localizes to the nucleus and promotes the stability and nuclear accumulation of transcriptionally active p53. It phosphorylates Thr18 of p53, reducing its ubiquitination and potentially regulating cell proliferation. Additionally, this protein phosphorylates histone, casein, and transcription factors ATF2 and c-JUN.
