Target Information
Chromosome 1 is the largest human chromosome, spanning about 260 million base pairs and making up approximately 8% of the human genome. It contains around 3,000 genes and is associated with numerous diseases. For example, Hutchinson-Gilford progeria is linked to defects in the LMNA gene encoding lamin A, causing nuclear abnormalities. The MUTYH gene contributes to familial adenomatous polyposis, and other conditions such as Stickler syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Gaucher disease, and Usher syndrome are also associated with chromosome 1. A breakpoint in 1q disrupting the DISC1 gene is linked to schizophrenia. Chromosome 1 aberrations are found in various cancers including head and neck cancer, malignant melanoma, and multiple myeloma.
