MFGE8 유전자는 preproprotein을 암호화하며, 단백질 분해 과정을 통해 여러 단백질 산물을 형성합니다. 주요 산물인 lactadherin은 세포막 당단백질로서, 세포 사멸 후 식세포 작용을 촉진합니다. 또한 상처 치유, 자가면역 질환, 암과 관련이 있습니다. Lactadherin은 추가 절단되어 medin을 형성하며, 이는 대동맥 중간층 아밀로이드(AMA)의 주요 단백질 성분입니다. 대체 스플라이싱을 통해 다양한 전사체 변형이 발생합니다.
