Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. A2M shares structural and functional similarities with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3, C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), exhibiting broad ligand-binding capacity. This property enables alpha-macroglobulins to act as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma. A2M can bind and inhibit a wide range of proteinases, serving as a panprotease inhibitor. In Alzheimer’s disease brains, A2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting its involvement in AD pathogenesis.
