Target Information
ATF6 is a transcription factor that acts during endoplasmic reticulum stress by activating unfolded protein response (UPR) target genes. It binds DNA on the 5'-CCAC[GA]-3' half of the ER stress response element (ERSE) and ERSE II sequences. Binding to ERSE requires NF-Y interaction.
ATF6 exists as homodimers and heterodimers with ATF6 beta and interacts with transcription factors such as NF-YC, GTF2I, YY1, and SRF. Under ER stress, the cleaved N-terminal domain translocates into the nucleus, where it functions as a transcription activator.
ATF6 belongs to the bZIP family, is N-glycosylated, and can be phosphorylated by MAPK14/P38MAPK.
