This gene encodes a member of the F-box protein family, characterized by a ~40 amino acid F-box motif. F-box proteins are subunits of the SCF (SKP1–Cullin–F-box) ubiquitin ligase complex, functioning in phosphorylation-dependent ubiquitination.
F-box proteins are classified into three types:
- Fbws: containing WD-40 domains
- Fbls: containing leucine-rich repeats
- Fbxs: containing various interaction modules or no recognizable motifs
The FBXW8 protein contains both an F-box motif and a WD-40 domain, placing it in the Fbw class.
