DjC9 (DnaJ subfamily C member 9) belongs to the Hsp40 (heat shock protein 40) family, functioning as a co-chaperone to Hsp70.
Hsp40 proteins are classified into three subfamilies (A, B, and C), defined by specific domains such as:
- Highly conserved alpha-helical N-terminal J-domain
- Glycine/phenylalanine-rich region
- Cysteine-rich region
- C-terminal beta-sheet domain
DjC9 is part of subfamily C, containing only the J-domain. It interacts with HSP70 via the J-domain to activate its ATPase activity.
