SARS(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)는 인간 코로나바이러스에 의해 발생합니다. 인간 코로나바이러스는 감기 등 상기도 질환의 주요 원인으로 알려져 있으며, 27–31 kb 크기의 가장 큰 RNA 게놈을 가진 양성가닥 RNA 바이러스입니다. 감염의 첫 단계는 바이러스 스파이크 단백질(139 kDa)이 숙주 세포 수용체와 결합하는 것입니다. 스파이크 단백질은 코로나바이러스의 주요 표면 항원으로, 글리코실화된 스파이크 단백질과 뉴클레오캡시드 단백질은 SARS 환자의 항혈청으로 감염된 세포 배양 상층액에서 검출될 수 있습니다.
