Gap junctions are specialized structures on plasma membranes of contacting adherent cells, consisting of closely packed transmembrane channels. These channels are formed by connexin proteins, which vary among tissues and are named based on molecular mass. Connexins are categorized as alpha or beta types according to sequence similarity. For example, CX43 is alpha-1, while CX32 and CX26 are beta-1 and beta-2 gap junction proteins, respectively. Connexins have four transmembrane, three intracellular, and two extracellular regions. Expression patterns differ across tissues and developmental stages, playing roles in processes such as embryo implantation.
