Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a homodimeric enzyme (86 kDa) containing two zinc atoms essential for catalytic function per monomer. It is optimally active in alkaline pH environments and is found across prokaryotes and eukaryotes with conserved functionality but structural variations. ALP plays a crucial role in liver metabolism and skeletal development. In bacteria, it provides inorganic phosphate, while in yeast, it serves as a model for studying membrane protein sorting.
