Target Information

This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase. Mitochondrial ATP synthase catalyzes ATP synthesis using an electrochemical proton gradient across the inner membrane during oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP synthase is composed of two linked multi-subunit complexes:

  • F1: the soluble catalytic core
  • Fo: the membrane-spanning proton channel component

The catalytic portion (F1) consists of 5 subunits (α, β, γ, δ, ε) in a 3α:3β:1γ:1δ:1ε ratio.
The proton channel (Fo) includes subunits a, b, and c.
This gene encodes the alpha subunit of the catalytic core. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
Pseudogenes of this gene are located on chromosomes 9, 2, and 16.
