Target Information
The ADH1A gene encodes a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. The encoded protein is the alpha subunit of class I alcohol dehydrogenase, which forms homo- and heterodimers of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. These enzymes catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. The gene is active in fetal liver but weakly active in adult liver and is located on chromosome 4 in a cluster with other alcohol dehydrogenase genes. Mutations may contribute to variation in personality traits and substance dependence.
