Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase α, β, γ) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis.
NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and can diffuse into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured.
It is mainly expressed in neurons and neuroendocrine cells, making it a useful marker for neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
Release of NSE into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury, and elevated levels are associated with conditions such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis, as well as with neoplasms including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
