Target Information

MEPCE is an S-adenosyl-L-methionine-dependent methyltransferase that adds a methylphosphate cap at the 5'-end of 7SK snRNA, stabilizing it (PubMed:17643375, 19906723, 30559425).
It also functions as part of the 7SK RNP complex, which sequesters the positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb) to prevent RNA polymerase II phosphorylation and transcriptional elongation.
Additionally, the 7SK RNP complex promotes snRNA gene transcription by RNA polymerase II via interaction with the little elongation complex (LEC).
Within the 7SK RNP complex, MEPCE stabilizes 7SK RNA and facilitates complex assembly.
Interaction with LARP7 occludes its catalytic center, conferring a non-enzymatic regulatory function (PubMed:19906723).
