Target Information
Spectrins are filamentous cytoskeletal proteins that serve as scaffold proteins stabilizing the plasma membrane and organizing intracellular organelles. They form alpha and beta dimers that assemble into tetramers in a head-to-head arrangement.
This gene encodes an alpha spectrin expressed in nonerythrocytic cells and is involved in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation. Mutations in this gene are associated with early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
