Target Information
Dicer is a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) endoribonuclease that plays a central role in short dsRNA-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing. It cleaves long dsRNAs and short hairpin pre-microRNAs (miRNA) into 21–23 nucleotide fragments with 3′ overhangs, producing short interfering RNAs (siRNA) and mature microRNAs. These guide the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to complementary RNAs to degrade or inhibit translation.
RNA interference mediated by siRNAs contributes to transcript elimination from mobile and repetitive DNA elements and degradation of viral RNA, while the miRNA pathway regulates specific gene expression.
