Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The RPS6 gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate for protein kinases in the ribosome, with phosphorylation of five C-terminal serine residues induced by stimuli such as growth factors and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
