Target Information

Ribosomes, the organelles responsible for protein synthesis, consist of a small (40S) and a large (60S) subunit containing over 80 distinct ribosomal proteins. Mammalian ribosomal proteins are encoded by multigene families that include processed pseudogenes and one functional intron-containing gene.
Ribosomal Protein S17 (RPS17, RPS17L1, RPS17L2) is a 135 amino acid component of the 40S subunit, localized in the cytoplasm and expressed ubiquitously. It belongs to the S17e family and plays a role in protein synthesis. Mutations in the RPS17 gene are associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA), a congenital disorder affecting erythroid differentiation. Multiple processed pseudogenes of RPS17 are scattered throughout the genome.
