Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the class-I pyridine nucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductase family. The enzyme is a homodimeric flavoprotein central to cellular antioxidant defense. It reduces oxidized glutathione disulfide (GSSG) to glutathione (GSH), a key cellular antioxidant.
Rare mutations in this gene cause hereditary glutathione reductase deficiency. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
