Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure. The core structure comprises four rings of 28 non-identical subunits; two rings consist of seven alpha subunits, and two rings consist of seven beta subunits. Proteasomes are distributed throughout eukaryotic cells at high concentrations and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent process through a non-lysosomal pathway. A modified form, the immunoproteasome, plays an essential role in processing class I MHC peptides. The PSMA5 gene encodes a member of the peptidase T1A family, which serves as a 20S core alpha subunit.
