Target Information

alpha-Internexin is a Class IV intermediate filament subunit expressed very early in neuronal development. It is related to but distinct from the better-known neurofilament triplet proteins (NF-L, NF-M, NF-H), sharing similar sequence motifs and intron organization.
Many mature neurons contain alpha-internexin in addition to NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H, while in some neurons, alpha-internexin is the only neurofilament subunit expressed.
Antibodies to internexin are valuable tools for studying and classifying neuronal types and tracing neuronal processes in tissues and cultures.
Due to its early developmental expression, alpha-internexin serves as a useful marker for neuronal progenitor cells and cells committed to neuronal lineages.
The potential use of antibodies to this protein in brain tumor studies remains to be explored.
