Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial T cell receptor complexes, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER. Unlike soluble ER proteins that contain a KDEL sequence for ER retention, calnexin lacks this motif but has positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER localization.
Calnexin structure includes:
- ER luminal domain: 461 amino acids
- Transmembrane segment: 22 amino acids
- Cytoplasmic tail: 89 amino acids
