Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCP) are part of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein (MACP) family. UCPs decouple oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate anion transfer across mitochondrial membranes and reduce mitochondrial membrane potential. Tissue-specific expression varies among UCPs. The SLC25A14 gene is highly expressed in brain and testis and includes an N-terminal hydrophobic domain not found in other UCPs. Two splice variants are known.
