Peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs) are innate immune molecules that bind peptidoglycans on Gram-positive bacteria. Peptidoglycan (PGN) is a key bacterial cell wall component recognized by eukaryotic immune systems. The PGRP family (PGRP-L, PGRP-S, PGRP-Ia, PGRP-Ib) plays a role in pathogen recognition.
- PGRP-L: Expressed mainly in liver, involved in host defense through acute phase protein production.
- PGRP-S: Found in neutrophils, inhibits Gram-positive bacterial growth, and is highly expressed in bone marrow (50–100× higher than in neutrophils).
