Target Information
The PCDHGC5 gene belongs to the protocadherin gamma gene cluster, one of three related clusters located on chromosome 5. These clusters have an immunoglobulin-like organization, suggesting a unique regulatory mechanism. The gamma cluster includes 22 genes divided into three subfamilies:
- Subfamily A: 12 genes
- Subfamily B: 7 genes and 2 pseudogenes
- Subfamily C: 3 genes
Each variable region exon encodes the extracellular region with six cadherin ectodomains and a transmembrane region, while constant region exons encode the shared cytoplasmic region. These neural cadherin-like proteins are believed to play critical roles in establishing and maintaining specific cell–cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing has been observed among the gamma cluster genes.
