Target Information
The HMG-box protein-1 (HBP1) is a member of the HMG family of transcription factors, characterized by the presence of a conserved high mobility group (HMG) 1 box that mediates DNA binding. HBP1 binds to tumor suppressor proteins Rb and p130 to initiate cell cycle arrest. Terminal cell differentiation requires this initial arrest followed by coordinated expression of tissue-specific marker genes.
HBP1 activity suppresses expression of tissue-specific genes by associating with MyoD proteins. In muscle cell differentiation, the MyoD family (Myf5, MyoD, myogenein) induces expression of cell-type specific proteins and contributes to phenotype development. Thus, terminal differentiation progression depends on decreased HBP1 activity and activation of MyoD-induced transcription.
