Target Information
Translocation of nuclear encoded preproteins into the mitochondrial matrix requires the coordinated action of the translocases Tom and Tim, located in the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes, respectively.
The Tom complex includes multiple receptor and structural subunits facilitating preprotein import, while the TIM channel (comprising Tim17, Tim23, and Tim44) imports nuclear-encoded mitochondrial preproteins.
Tim17 exists as two isoforms (Tim17a and Tim17b) differing in their C-terminal sequences and is ubiquitously expressed. Tim17 and Tim23 form the structural core of the inner membrane channel, and Tim44 recruits matrix Hsp70 to assist preprotein translocation.
