Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in various tumor cells and plays a critical role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with regulation of these processes.

c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development. Deregulated c-Myc expression can induce apoptosis and contribute to oncogenesis. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either the amino or carboxy terminus of target proteins.

Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been observed in multiple human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. N-Myc amplification is associated with neuroblastomas. Chromosomal translocations involving the c-Myc locus are characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell proliferative disorders. Aberrant c-Myc expression has also been documented in colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
