Target Information

The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure composed of four rings of 28 non-identical subunits—two rings of seven alpha subunits and two rings of seven beta subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway.
The immunoproteasome, a modified form, processes class I MHC peptides. The PSMB8 gene encodes a member of the proteasome B-type (T1B) family, a 20S core beta subunit located in the MHC class II region. Expression is induced by gamma interferon, replacing catalytic subunit 3 (proteasome beta 5 subunit) in the immunoproteasome. Proteolytic processing generates the mature subunit. Two alternative transcripts encoding isoforms have been identified, both producing the same mature subunit.
