Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is subsequently converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotes; homodimeric 32 kDa protein with one Cu and one Zn per subunit.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme (~80 kDa tetramer); located in the mitochondrial matrix near the respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular form; heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase; delivers Cu to Cu/Zn-SOD and activates it through direct cofactor insertion.
