Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress.
The Spike (S) protein is crucial for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, and serves as a major target for antibody development, entry inhibitors, and vaccines.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) of the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, exhibiting higher affinity than the SARS-CoV RBD.
The S1 subunit (residues 14–685) contains the RBD, while the S2 subunit (residues 686–1273) mediates membrane fusion. The S-ECD represents the extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
