Target Information

Spectrins are filamentous cytoskeletal proteins that act as scaffold proteins stabilizing the plasma membrane and organizing intracellular organelles. They form alpha and beta dimers which associate into tetramers in a head-to-head arrangement.
This gene encodes an alpha spectrin expressed in nonerythrocytic cells and is involved in cellular functions such as DNA repair and cell cycle regulation.
Mutations in this gene are associated with early infantile epileptic encephalopathy-5. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
